UK in the UK: MAE students participate in United Kingdom Hypersonics Doctoral Training Network
Five students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering recently participated in the United Kingdom Hypersonics Doctoral Training Network (UKHDTN), an intensive international program that prepares the next generation of researchers and engineers in hypersonic science and technology.
The UKHDTN is a collaborative initiative—led by the University of Oxford and Imperial College London—that unites universities, industry and government partners to coordinate high-speed vehicle research (greater than Mach 5) and specialized doctoral training.
Throughout the week, University of Kentucky mechanical and aerospace engineering students learned alongside graduate researchers from across the United Kingdom and engaged with internationally recognized leaders in hypersonic aerothermodynamics, experimental methods and flight testing. The program provided invaluable opportunities to develop technical expertise, build global research networks and gain exposure to cutting-edge advances in aerospace engineering.
Alexandre Martin, Ph.D., W. Raymond Stamler Chair Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and director of NASA Kentucky, also contributed to the program by delivering a lecture on flight experimentation, highlighting the role of suborbital and orbital flight testing in advancing hypersonic technologies.
Experiences like these reflect the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering's growing leadership in hypersonics and its commitment to preparing students for impactful careers through world-class research, international collaboration, and hands-on learning.
Opportunity made possible these partners: NASA Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, NASA EPSCoR and the UK Hypersonics Institute.
